Mystikal Jacks Series

Papa Bois
Mama D’Leau

Middle Grade Folklore Series

Makayla inherits a wooden jacks game from her grandmother and she puts it on her shelf. There are too many modern games to be playing that ancient thing.

When faced with a blackout, one rainy Saturday Makayla decides to give it a try, Now she, her brother Malcolm and her least favorite person in the world, Amaya is trapped in a psychedelic nightmare of a game where folklore characters are real.

They have to find all ten jacks, play the game, and win ten different levels to return home. The children are up to the challenge at first, but soon realizes that with each level the game gets harder, stranger and even dangerous. There are glitches, the rules sometimes don’t apply and the characters of the game are hiding something. In addition, they are not the only players and the stakes may be higher than they first understood, because some players have never left the game.

Makayla’s box is something of an enigma as well, it calls to the game and maybe it doesn’t want to get them home but as the game owner she isn’t having any of it, one way or the other she’s getting herself and her team home.

The game is player sensitive and brings to life familiar characters and themes of the Caribbean.
