NEW BOOKS – OCTOBER 2025

Aajumbee Publishing House proudly unveils its latest collection of culturally rich children’s books, expanding its mission to celebrate Caribbean heritage through storytelling.

With bold illustrations, authentic voices, and themes of courage, community, and cultural pride, these books continue Aajumbee’s commitment to empowering Caribbean youth through literature.

When little JC catches a cold, he decides there’s only one thing that will make him feel better, dragon soup! After all, it must be the strongest, warmest, most magical soup in the world. JC sets off on a hilarious quest to find a dragon to cook up the cure. But things don’t go quite as planned…

Every dragon he meets is terrified! With wide eyes and trembling tails, they all insist they know nothing about soup, especially not the kind involving dragons. As word spreads through Dragon City, a panic brews: Is this tiny human planning to put them in a pot? Full of laugh-out-loud misunderstandings, cozy illustrations, and a heartwarming twist. Dragon Soup is a delightful tale about kindness, communication, and the healing power of a warm bowl of soup. Perfect for children who love dragons, adventure, and a little bit of silly fun.

No dragons were harmed in this soup making process.

FREEDOM HAIR

This heartwarming tale celebrates natural hair, African heritage, and the beauty of being yourself. Perfect for young readers, Freedom Hair inspires confidence, cultural pride, and the freedom to love who you are, from root to crown.
With each twist and coil, learn about the powerful journey of the ancestors, who fought to be free and proud of who they are.

Summary of Emancipation (for children)

A long time ago in the Caribbean, many African people were taken from their homes and brought to work as slaves. They were forced to work very hard and were not treated fairly. But the African people never gave up hope. They held onto their traditions, stories, songs, and strength.

After many years of struggle, speaking out, and fighting for justice, slavery was finally ended. This is called Emancipation. It meant that the enslaved people were now free.

In different islands, Emancipation came at different times. In Trinidad and Tobago, it was on August 1, 1834, a very special day we still celebrate today! People dress in African clothes, dance to drums, and honor the brave men, women, and children who helped win freedom.

Emancipation reminds us to be proud of who we are, to celebrate our heritage, and to always stand up for what’s right, just like Oshun and her beautiful, freedom-filled hair.

Papa Bois Saves the Day

Abijah loves nothing more than snapping pictures of the world around him. On vacation at his grandfather’s home at the edge of the forest, every day feels like an adventure. When a trip to a nearby waterfall with his cousins ends in an afternoon nap, Abijah wanders off with his camera, following the bright wings of parrots. But as night falls, he realizes he is lost, and fear creeps in with the shadows.

Just when the forest feels its scariest, Papa Bois, the gentle, wise Father of the Forest appears. He shelters Abijah for the night, sharing warmth, safety, and even a hearty breakfast. By morning, Papa Bois leads Abijah back to his worried family, teaching him that the forest is both powerful and protective.

Beyond the Book: Marketing for Authors

Empowering Caribbean voices through publishing education

Aspiring authors and independent publishers are being presented with an unmissable opportunity this year: the Writer’s Series 2025. Hosted by Marsha Gomes-Mckie, publishing powerhouse and Regional Advisor for the Society of Children Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) Caribbean South, this three-part seminar series is more than a collection of workshops, it’s a roadmap to publishing success.

Held at the 1st Floor Seminar Room, NALIS in Port of Spain from 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon, each Saturday session builds upon the last to provide participants with critical insight into the publishing landscape, especially tailored for Caribbean voices. Here’s why every writer, editor, small publisher, or creative entrepreneur should attend all three sessions:

Why attend:
Many writers believe the hard part is finishing the manuscript, but publishing is a business, and marketing is where success often begins or ends. This session is dedicated to the unique needs of small publishers, who must promote books with limited budgets but big dreams.

What you’ll gain:

  • Practical strategies for reaching your audience, both locally and globally
  • A Caribbean-focused approach to advertising with limited resources
  • Ways to see your writing as a business

Why it matters:
Without visibility, even the most powerful stories remain unread. Attending this session ensures you learn how to get your books into readers’ hands.

Why attend:
In today’s digital-first world, online presence isn’t optional, it’s essential. This session dives deep into how authors and small publishers can create a professional, sustainable digital marketing strategy without spending all your time on social media.

What you’ll gain:

  • A blueprint for setting up your digital ecosystem (website, email, social media)
  • Techniques to create compelling content that builds your author brand
  • Tips for growing your mailing list and increasing book sales via online platforms
  • How to measure success through analytics and adapt strategies accordingly

Why it matters:
A strong digital footprint opens international doors. Whether you’re targeting diaspora readers, schools, or niche folklore lovers, this session ensures you’re searchable, sellable, and seen.

Why attend:
The publishing industry is filled with hopeful creators, and unfortunately, predators looking to exploit them. This crucial final session reveals the red flags to avoid and how to protect your work, your money, and your dreams as it just takes one scam to deplete your funds and your business.

What you’ll gain:

  • Real-world examples of common scams targeting Caribbean writers
  • A checklist of what to look for in reputable editors, agents, and printers
  • Legal and contractual basics every author should know

Why it matters:
Knowledge is power, and in publishing, it’s also protection. Too many writers fall prey to vanity presses and false promises. This session arms you with the tools to make informed, empowered choices.

Open Session

This session will end at 10:30 am after which we will spend the next hour and a half, taking about any issue that you need help with.

The Writer’s Series 2025 isn’t just about marketing or avoiding pitfalls, it’s about building a sustainable, empowered literary career rooted in Caribbean identity and global vision. Whether you’re a debut writer trying to get your first book out or a small publisher looking to scale, this series speaks directly to the challenges and triumphs of publishing from the Caribbean.

Final Thoughts: Invest in Your Literary Future

The Writer’s Series 2025 is free, but its value is immeasurable. With expert-led guidance, practical resources, and a community of like-minded creatives, this is not just another set of seminars, it’s a launchpad.

Don’t just attend one session. Make the commitment to attend all three. Your stories—and your readers—deserve it.

The Modern Folklore Industry

The Rise of Folklore-Inspired Young Adult Literature in the Caribbean: In the past 5 – 10 years, Caribbean young adult literature has experienced a storytelling renaissance, with authors weaving traditional folklore into compelling narratives that capture teen readers’ imaginations.

  • Tracey Baptiste’s Jumbies (published by Llewellyn, 2015): Baptiste reimagines Caribbean folklore jumbies in a thrilling middle-grade/YA series. This series popularized folklore-based in the Caribbean diasporic and was one of the first to come. The first book introduces Corinne La Mer on a mission to stop a jumbie threat in her island home. In book 2, Rise of the Jumbies (2017), Corinne faces a new threat when children go missing and The Jumbie God’s Revenge (2019), The epic conclusion involves storms and supernatural power as Corinne confronts the jumbie God Huracan.
  • Barbadian Shakirah Bourne’s – Josephine Against the Sea (North American edition, Scholastic, 2021), Originally published in the Caribbean as My Fishy Stepmom (Blue Banyan Books, 2019), this middle grade fantasy follows an 11-year-old cricketer who uncovers her father’s mysterious new girlfriend is not human. Shakirah then went on to publish Nightmare Island (Scholastic, 2023) and Beware the Heartman (Scholastic, 2024)
  • Ciannon Smart’s Witches Steeped in Gold (published by HarperCollins, 2021)
A YA dark fantasy rooted in Jamaican mythology and Obeah traditions, this novel offers richly crafted folklore blended with political intrigue.
  • Trinidadian Danielle Y. C. McClean’ s and her Secrets of Oscuros folklore series, published with Caribbean Reads. Book 1, The Protectors Pledge (2016) follows 12-year-old JV who ventures into the mysterious Oscuros Forest in his village of Alcavere. When a fellow villager disappears, JV must confront mythical creatures, including Papa Bois, and uphold a sacred promise to save his community. The story continues in Book 2, the Whisperer’s Warning (2022).
  • Trinidadian Marsha Gomes-Mc Kie’s, Mystikal Jacks Series, focuses on bringing Caribbean folklore to the fore from the Caribbean. The first book Makayla in the land of Papa Bois, (2023) sees Makayla, along with her brother Malcolm and foster sister Amaya, diving into folklore via Granny enchanted Jack’s game. They must face 10 levels to return home. In the second book Makayla in Mama D’Leau’s Underwater Kingdom (2024). They enter the underwater realm of Mama D’Leau, guided by a bossy octopus and a playful mermaid, while facing threats like the Massacooraaman. In Makayla and the Soucouyant’s Secret (2025), the trio progresses to the fiery third level of the Mystikal Jacks game, where the confront rock monsters, tar‑babies, and a fiery soucouyant. This series exposes young readers to many different folklore characters, the popular ones and those sometimes forgotten.

Why It Matters

  • Folklore Revival: Each book brings Caribbean myths vividly to life, ensuring that local legends are passed down to younger generations in engaging, modern and contemporary formats. The development of this emerging genre of Caribbean Mythology is likely to progress as additional works are incorporated into the category, but it will not solidify itself as a genre if Caribbean writers don’t pay attention to it.
  • Middle-Grade Appeal: The adventure-game structure appeals to readers aged 7–18, blending fun, suspense, and moral challenges. There is room in the market for children’s books that cater to a younger age and even adult contemporary themes where you can make more of a historical impact.
  • Representation & Inspiration: Featuring children of Caribbean heritage, the series offers relatable protagonists and strengthens cultural identity. For example, in the Mystikal Jacks series, young readers get the opportunity to see themselves reflected in exciting, magical adventures rooted in their own culture. The protagonists, Makayla, Malcolm, and Amaya are not only relatable in their personalities and sibling dynamics, but they also speak, think, and respond to the world in ways that mirror the Caribbean experience. This authentic representation affirms to readers that their stories, environments, and cultural backgrounds are worthy of being told and celebrated.

By navigating challenges inspired by regional folklore as always being evil, the children meet modern folklore with a purpose, motives, and diverse personalities. Heroes in tales that would traditionally cast outsiders or mythical beings from foreign lands. This shift is both empowering and inspiring, reinforcing a sense of pride and identity in young readers. It encourages them to embrace their heritage, ask questions about traditional stories, and recognize the value of their cultural roots in shaping who they are. Through imaginative storytelling and familiar voices, Mystikal Jacks helps cultivate confidence, curiosity, and a deeper connection to Caribbean legacy and community.

  • Indie Publishing Power: Aajumbee Publishing’s dedication highlights the potential of regional small presses in fostering Caribbean voices and narratives.

Emerging & Independent Publishers

  1. Peepal Tree Press (UK)

Folklore, stories of jumbies, ancestors, spirits, anchors young readers to ancestral heritage, strengthening regional pride and memory. These stories bring fresh mythologies to global YA and Children’s literature, standing out among Eurocentric fantasy by showcasing Caribbean cosmologies. Caribbean teens, who are the next group of creators see themselves as protagonists in magical worlds with familiar lore, fostering cultural validation and emotional resonance.

The current trend reflects a broader shift: Caribbean publishers and international houses alike are embracing “Own Voices” an authentic narrative rooted in lived culture. This evolution marks folklore not only as a storytelling tool but as cultural reclamation, bridging history with modern identity. As more authors emerge in every genre and regional publishers grow, the next decade promises even richer, more diverse mythical tales emerging from Caribbean shores.

CHILDREN’S FAITH SERIES

Just a little bit before Covid, I was in NALIS (National Library) in Port of Spain, Trinidad and a mother and her two daughters were looking for a children’s book on the Orisha Gods. For some reason she approached me and asked if I knew of a book. I didn’t. But that got me thinking.

The Caribbean is a melting pot of diversity and religions; everyone knows that, but there seemed to be a gap in religious literature for smaller religions, made for only children. I searched the shelves and found mostly Christian books. I believe that having books on all religions for children gives the opportunity to understand, not just yours but other people religions.

So, i set out to publish a number of books within each religion on different topics in different formats, reading, coloring, activity style to bridge the gap between us.

I began the series in May 2025: See the first books here:

Lunah is the Fae Princess with no powers, her only royal duty is an arranged marriage to the Lycan Alpha to secure the boundaries of her lands. She enters a world that not only unlocks the secret of her lineage but a truth about her missing powers.
Alpha Arn-Rah commits to helping his mate master her powers and it triggers a suppressed memory from his childhood, which revealed what really happened the night his parents died. With pure nerve and brute force, he fights to uncover a conspiracy which threatens to devastate the continuance of his pack. When Lunah is called upon to step in and complete the Blue Moon Ceremony of the Fae, she is put in harm’s way, and he will do anything to protect his mate.
Their ultimate success will only come, when they join forces to reconcile their past, in time to save a world that depends only on the strength of their love to survive.

Arn and Lunah control O’Moriyah as one. She is the Queen of the Faes and he, the Lycan Alpha, but they have two very different parenting styles. We follow the coming of age of their eldest children, a twin, Leon and Arnya, the first FaeCons born to the Blue Moon.
Even though Arnya is in line to be the next Queen, she would rather be an Alpha. Thinking that her only problem is her father’s nose, she seizes the opportunity while her parents are away fighting vampires, to infiltrate a male Alpha-in-training competition. Leon is more than happy for his sister to pretend to be him, since he wants nothing but his mother’s kingdom. Arnya soon realizes that victory can be bittersweet, as the price you pay may just be the love and trust of everyone you love.
Falon has been in love with Arnya for as long as he could remember, yet, she puts her ambition in front of him, but his wolf has a plan and this time he has to show her that love can conquer everything before it’s too late.

Leon is a wonder of nature, a flying wolf. He’s handsome, strong, smart and a bit of a ladies’ man. He certainly isn’t interested in wolf work and will choose being pampered as a fairy Prince any day. As his sister Arnya finds her place in their world, he is more confused than ever.
He disregards the laws of the land and befriends a human who is secretly watching over a hidden vampire den that is preparing to attack. Marsha’s Folktales Storytelling

World Folktales & Fables Week, held annually from March 16 to 22, is a global celebration of the power of storytelling and the cultural significance of folktales and fables. These narratives, passed down through generations, carry with them not only entertainment but also profound lessons, cultural wisdom, and a sense of shared identity. This week honors the role that these stories play in preserving cultures while also inspiring new narratives that continue to shape our world today.

In the Caribbean, folklore is a treasure trove of vibrant tales that have been nurtured through generations, steeped in the diverse traditions of African, Indigenous, and European ancestry. One writer who has masterfully tapped into this rich cultural wellspring is Marsha Gomes-Mckie. Her works bring Caribbean folklore to life for a new generation, offering readers an exciting blend of mystery, adventure, and cultural exploration. Each of her books introduces new characters and experiences that are deeply connected to the cultural fabric of the Caribbean, all while making these age-old stories accessible to children and adults alike.

Marsha’s writes the Mystikal Jacks series with her daughter, the three books are below.

When Makayla’s granny dies her father gives her a Jack’s game he found in her safe. One stormy day, the box glows and as Makayla tosses the ball and grabs a jack, the unimaginable happens.
Soon she’s responsible for getting Malcolm, Amaya and herself home, trampling through a psychedelic forest, avoiding Jumbees, talking to folklore characters while wrestling with a deep feeling that maybe the game was never supposed to be played and her granny left a secret bigger than all of them. Will Makayla find all the jacks and take them home or are they destined to become a part of the game?

In this level, they must travel to Mama D’leau’s underwater kingdom to find the second jack. Their guide is a bossy octopus and a playful mermaid but still waters eventually get murky as they face danger.
Makayla will do anything to get her team home, even if it means facing a an angry Massacooraman who’s after her game box.
Join the team as they find the second jack and get one level closer to home.

Makayla, her brother Malcolm, and her foster sister Amaya are on level three of Mystikal Jacks during a Folklore adventure. They must navigate through a land on fire to locate another jack. Along the way, they encounter rock monsters, tar-babies, and a flaming Soucouyant, and gain more information about the game from a new acquaintance. Makayla is determined to keep her team together, even if it requires navigating a tar-pit or confronting loners.

Books like 30 Caribbean Folklore legends are crucial, especially within the context of Caribbean storytelling. They serve several important purposes:

  1. Cultural Preservation: As the world becomes more interconnected, it’s vital to preserve unique cultural narratives. Gomes-Mckie’s works act as a bridge between the past and present, ensuring that Caribbean folklore remains a vital part of global literary heritage.
  2. Representation: For children and adults of Caribbean descent, seeing their own cultural myths and characters represented in literature is powerful. These stories provide a sense of identity, pride, and belonging, fostering a deeper connection to one’s roots.
  3. Inspiration for Future Storytellers: By introducing new characters, who face age-old Caribbean fears and mysteries, Gomes-Mckie provides an inspirational model for other writers. Her work proves that folklore is not just a static relic of the past but a living, breathing art form that can evolve and inspire future generations.
  4. Broadening Global Understanding: The universal themes within Caribbean folklore, such as good versus evil, courage in the face of fear, and the power of family, resonate with readers worldwide. These stories have the power to connect diverse audiences, fostering a greater understanding of Caribbean culture and traditions.

This book explores 30 popular folklore myths and characters throughout the Caribbean, what they are known for, how to protect yourself against them and what they look like. Diverse Novel Covers

Diverse novel covers are essential for several reasons, especially in today’s multicultural and globalized world where fiction and non-fiction must represent all cultures.

Representation Matters: Diverse covers help readers see themselves in the stories they read. This is particularly important for young readers, as seeing characters who look like them can be validating and empowering.

Broadening Perspectives: For readers from different backgrounds, diverse covers can serve as windows into other cultures and experiences, fostering empathy and understanding.

Market Demand: There is a growing demand for diverse books and covers. Publishers and authors who embrace diversity can reach a wider audience and meet the needs of a more inclusive market.

Challenging Stereotypes: Diverse covers can challenge and break down stereotypes by showcasing a variety of characters and stories. This helps to create a more nuanced and accurate representation of different cultures and identities.

Promoting Inclusivity in Publishing: The push for diverse covers is part of a broader movement towards inclusivity in the publishing industry. It encourages publishers to consider diversity in all aspects of book production, from content to marketing.

Join diversenovelcovers as we make a space for finding, honoring and creating covers that embrace all the above and more.

ADULT ROMANCE / PARANORMAL PRINT TITLES

The story tells of the making of the very first ball of fire. Trinidad wavers between the British and the French and SouCou is a slave, stolen from her beloved homeland. Born a Sharman in Africa she is a prized possession because of her talents, she finds love then heart break but through it all she wants her daughter to be free. She refuses to believe that her new owner Governor Yant will keep any of his promises and instead bargains with the God of Fire, Shango to grant her heart’s desire in exchange for her very soul … but SouCou’s rage is so powerful that she does not die, and becomes a new creature of the night …

An arranged, loveless marriage, Ralone and Omari rule his kingdom like strangers. With a foundation of mistrust and secrets these two pledge to stay apart forever.
Omari sinks deep into depression, as she ponders the reality of her existence, forever trapped by duty, never to be loved, while Ralone is haunted by the past, even though he wishes for a real future with Omari.
Sometimes, the only one who can heal your heart is the one who broke it in the first place, but finding your way back to love means you have to learn the hardest lesson of all, that only forgiveness can heal.

Almost 200 years ago the Fairy world turned to the Lycans for protection. Although safe, they are faced with the reality that the alliance has weakened their blood line, magic is dying.

He’s also handsome, strong, smart and a bit of a ladies’ man who is learning about love from a most unlikely charmer.
Suddenly, Leon is thrown in the middle of the war, and Arn and Lunah are faced with the hardest decision they will ever make, how to save Leon when it means putting O’Moriyah in mortal danger.

He’s also handsome, strong, smart and a bit of a ladies’ man who is learning about love from a most unlikely charmer.
Suddenly, Leon is thrown in the middle of the war, and Arn and Lunah are faced with the hardest decision they will ever make, how to save Leon when it means putting O’Moriyah in mortal danger.
